Research Tiers
Choose from three research tiers — Base, Research, and Deep Research — to control how deeply the AI searches for answers.
Every question you ask the AI Assistant can be answered at one of three depth levels. Select a tier before sending your message to control the scope and quality of the response.
Base
Best for: Quick questions, document summaries, and straightforward tasks.
Answers using the AI's built-in legal knowledge and any documents you have uploaded or that exist in the current matter.
No external sources are consulted.
Fastest response time — typically a few seconds.
Examples:
"Summarize this NDA in three bullet points."
"What is the governing law clause in this contract?"
"Rewrite this paragraph in plain English."
Research
Best for: Questions that require case law, statutory references, or verified legal authority.
Searches the Irys database and external case law sources such as CourtListener.
Returns cited answers with references to specific cases, statutes, and regulations.
Moderate response time — typically 10 to 30 seconds depending on query complexity.
Examples:
"What is the standard for piercing the corporate veil in Delaware?"
"Find recent case law on non-compete enforceability in California."
"Are there any federal regulations governing data breach notification timelines?"
Deep Research
Best for: Memo-quality reports, complex legal questions, and multi-jurisdictional analysis.
Draws from multiple source types: internal matter documents, case law databases, web sources, and statutory repositories.
Employs iterative deepening — the AI refines its search queries across multiple rounds to surface the most relevant sources.
Produces structured output with section headings, analysis, and 15+ inline citations.
Longer response time — typically 1 to 3 minutes for thorough reports.
Examples:
"Write a research memo on the enforceability of AI-generated contract terms under the UCC."
"Analyze the regulatory landscape for telehealth across all 50 states."
"Compare how courts in the Second and Ninth Circuits have treated implied warranties in SaaS agreements."
When to use each tier:
Start with Base for everyday tasks where speed matters and external authority is not needed.
Step up to Research when your question requires case law, statutes, or verified legal citations.
Use Deep Research when you need a comprehensive, memo-ready deliverable with multiple sources and structured analysis.
